The Sosan Hotel is one of the newest hotels to be built as it was built in 1989 for the purpose of accommodating athletes but then was completely renovated in 2016. It is now open to tourists as one of the most beautiful hotels in North Korea.
The Yanggakdo International Hotel, however, remains more visited and famous among travelers.
Directly translated, Sosan means the mountain of the west (So = West and San = mountain).
The hotel is located in the western part of Pyongyang, at the top of a hill. The hotel is also located on the sports road, where you can find centers for all kinds of sports, including taekwondo, badminton, basketball, swimming, etc.
From the outside, the Sosan hotel with its 30 floors looks impressive, and when you step in from the swinging carousel door you are not disappointed. Gold and marble slabs adorn the hall in the lobby of the hotel. From the lobby it is possible to play a game of billiards, enjoy a refreshment in the hotel bar or go to your room where you can relax after a long day.
Of course, in your room you have both a bed, chairs and table. Add to this a bathroom where you can use the bath and enjoy that the cleaning ladies have always provided clean towels. However, the most notable thing about most of the rooms is the associated balcony. From here you get a fantastic view of the whole capital of Pyongyang. In the rooms you can relax while the sun goes down after a long day. A long day that ends with a good night’s sleep before a new day starts.
The breakfast buffet starts at 6.30 where you will be served bread and a bit of greenery. In addition, there is a wealth of options in the buffet itself. However, those options are characterized by Asian cuisine, but if you can turn to eating rice with accessories in the morning, Sosan’s breakfast buffet is one of the far better offerings in North Korea. Breakfast kicks off at 10am, or at the time you have agreed to depart with your guides. The hotel was built in 1989 for the purpose of accommodating athletes when visiting the country. Now it stands as one of the most beautiful and visited hotels in North Korea. The only more visited hotel is Yanggakdo International Hotel.
