Turkmenistan

The worlds most special country

Turkmenistan is considered one of the world's most obscure countries. The country is vastly different from a regular western country. It is also a country that most people do not even know. It is pretty obvious why though. The country has roughly 12.000 tourists a year whereas Copenhagen, for instance, has about 10 million.

And no - it is not because Turkmenistan is anyway near smaller than Denmark. The country has 5 million citizens whereas 1 million lives in the capital, Ashgabat. The density of the population is relatively large though because 80% of the country is covered by desert.

Another reason for isolation is the lack of internet in Turkmenistan. Approximately 80.000 people or 1,6% of the population have access to the internet.

Despite the isolation, Turkmenistan is a country with so much to offer! Did you know that Turkmenistan is 4th biggest provider of natural gas? That Turkmenistan is the 9th biggest cotton provider? And that it is possible to visit and even fry an egg next to a gas crater which has been burning for more than 40 years?

These special phenomena, exciting architecture and different cultures make Turkmenistan a unique travel destination. We want to explore that on our next trip!
